When I first moved to Los Angeles I had no idea that I would spend my first seven years working in theater, not movies, but that is exactly what I did. I worked as a theater critic for three different publications, but primarily The Culver City News which has a readership of nearly 38,000. What came as shock to me, is that there is so much theater in LA, there were weeks where I would see 2-3 plays to keep up with the demand. And in the month of June, I would cover the Hollywood Fringe Festival where I attended and critiqued over 30 plays per festival. During that time I also worked as a judge in playwriting competitions for the Colorado Theater Guild, Athena Project, and Urbanite Theater. I have watched, read, and critiqued upwards of a thousand plays, and now I want to share that expertise with the artists writing them.

Find out what a critic thinks before your audience arrives.

Playwright Workshop:

  • I will do a critical read of your play. Then we will jump on a video call for two hours to discuss my findings, answer questions, and if appropriate brainstorm possible solutions to problem areas, or next steps. After our call, I will send you the recording so you can revisit the session as you continue to work on your script.
  • I know times are tough right now, so I am offering this workshop for a limited time for $350. $100 due at delivery of the script, and the remaining $250 due before our call starts.
  • Please note, as no play can be written and universally loved by all, I acknowledge that there are topics/types of plays, that no matter how good they are, I will never like them as they are not my cup of tea. If I read your play and discover that it falls into this category, your $100 will be returned, as I know my insights will not be overly helpful for you. Thank you for your understanding of this policy.

Recommendations for Kat:

  • As a novice playwright, Kat walked me through processes that are important for theaters who are considering plays.  Her thoughtfulness and honesty come from a place of being an actor, critic, and overall student of learning.  Kat pulls from her aspirants, complex plots that were previously instinct.  Kat’s feedback and coaching takes you from infancy to finished product.  You would enjoy the interactive workshop where there is freedom in expressing, exploring, and developing the characters and plot.  Kat was recommended to me, and I recommend her to others. – Mary A.
  • Working with Kat is wonderful. She knows how to find the spots in your story or script that need working on, or tightening up. While working with her I found she often pinpointed things that I knew needed help, but hadn’t been sure how it needed help. Her advice has helped my revision process move forward more smoothly and with more clarity than previous revisions without her help! Her knowledge and experience shows in her notes, and in her ability to relate her thoughts to the author in a constructive and helpful way. Every time I interacted with her I was left feeling like not only had I done good work, but I also knew where to go to make it better. She has been a great and positive influence on my writing.  – Adina N.
