Waiting for Affleck

Affleck

Caroline Sweet, the writer, and performer of Waiting for Affleck, answered some quick questions for @SeeItOrSkipItLA!

1.Why do you think people pine over celebrities, and at what point does it go from pining to stalking? Not that I’m calling you a stalker or anything . . .

A: You know, it’s interesting… I never thought of myself as someone who pines after a celebrity. I mean, it’s true, Ben Affleck is a celebrity, and for all intents and purposes, I do not know him personally. But that said, I liken my very real feelings to having a crush on a coworker you barely speak to or someone who is in your high school class. You’ve admired them from afar, and you can’t explain it, but you have this feeling in your gut that you’re perfect for each other. That’s how I feel about Ben. As for why other people pine after celebrities, you’d have to ask those crazies! Kidding, kidding… we tend to put celebrities on a pedestal. They seem aspirational to people. Everyone wants to aspire to something great, and I think pining after a celebrity is part of that. Now stalking… that’s next level. That’s illegal.

2.Why did you decide to donate all proceeds of your show to a food shelter, and which one did you pick?

A: I know that hunger is a cause Ben Affleck (and for that matter, Matt Damon) cares about greatly. I don’t think any Fringers will tell you they’re in this to make money, so if I have some extra, let’s donate it to something that would make Ben proud! It’s all going to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

3.What about your show makes it perfect for the Fringe?
A: My show is a crazy, energetic, exciting ride! It’s creative (I think!) and a piece of live theater that this community is all about.

4.What do you hope the audience walks away with after your show?
A: Without giving too much away, I hope they walk away with the sense that it’s ok to have crazy dreams. It’s ok to be your authentic self. It’s not only OK, it’s important!

5.What show, other than yours, are you most excited to see at the Fringe?

A: The Mermaid Wars! My director (Marisa Van Den Borre) is in it, and after all the support she’s given to me, I can’t wait to give some back to her!
