Shakespeare(ish)

Ish

Members of Rogue Artists Ensemble, creators of Shakespeare(ish) answered some quick questions for @SeeItOrSkipItLA!

1. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being rolling over in his grave and 10 being raising a toast in salute, where do you think Shakespeare himself would fall in a review of this show?

A: Shakespeare would keep rolling I fear….. Actually no, I think we would get a 8 because he would be offended beyond belief but would at the end of the show fall in love with the players, music and love that’s been poured into deconstructing the work of the world’s greatest writer (if he was alive ever and or real).

2. Your show is described as hyper-family-friendly, will it also be of equal interest to those of us who do not have children?

A: We love Pixar movies in that they are great to watch for all ages with undercurrents and humor that’s just for adults. We think Shakespeare(ish) is delightful, bawdy fun that people with no toddlers in tow will especially enjoy. Rogue Artists Ensemble has a long history of creating work that is only for mature audiences so that history is what we always bring to the play-making table.

3. What about your show makes it perfect for the Fringe?

A: Shakespeare (ish) is a perfect fringe show…. it’s manic, compact, hilarious and incredible touching. It’s a distillation of Shakespeare’s work, themes and characters into something that is completely new and unfiltered. It’s a bard-tastic time.

4. What do you hope the audience walks away with after your show?

A: Many people deify Shakespeare and approach his work with a feeling of reverence and sanctity. We’re not those people and we hope that our audiences will come to have a new appreciation for how only through not holding Shakespeare’s work as precious and freeing yourself to deconstruct and play can you uncover such wonderful truths that resonate perhaps more through this lens.

5. What show, other than yours, are you most excited to see at the Fringe?

A: Good question…. The Devil You Say… it’s got puppets and the devil in it.
